GLD jewelry is built the right way, PVD gold over 316L stainless steel, but at $140 to $170 for a 5mm Miami Cuban (at time of writing, October 2026), it's worth it mainly if you want the GLD name and its sports and hip-hop style. For a classic gold Cuban you can wear every day, Saphir's 5mm Miami Cuban Link Chain uses the same kind of build for $65 to $68, and its lifetime warranty doesn't list a replacement fee.
GLD Shop's lifetime guarantee does. Each replacement on a standard gold-plated piece costs $19.99, and $29.99 on earrings and non-iced vermeil, so "lifetime" there means lifetime with a bill attached.
If you're a man who wants one good-looking gold chain that survives the shower and doesn't cost a car payment, Saphir is the better buy. Every order ships free and comes with a free chain in the box.
What do you get from GLD Shop for the money?
A real chain from a real company. GLD's own FAQ says "Most products including chains and watches utilize 316L surgical grade stainless steel as the base metal," finished with what it calls a "proprietary PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) gold plating process." That's the right build for daily wear, and it's the same base metal Saphir uses.
GLD also sells gold vermeil, "at least 2.5 microns thick" over sterling silver, and a separate solid gold line. It designs everything in Miami and produces in the USA and Italy. The old thegldshop.com address now forwards to gld.com, in case you were wondering why the site changed.
The catalog leans hard into sports and hip-hop: NFL and NCAA pendants and athlete collaborations sit right next to the Cubans. If that's your style, GLD does it well.
How much do GLD chains cost compared to Saphir?
About double, piece for piece, and close to triple on tennis necklaces. A 5mm GLD Cuban is $140 to $170 against Saphir's $65 to $68, and a 3mm GLD tennis necklace is $220 to $240 against Saphir's $79 to $89. These GLD prices are from its own store, checked October 2026.
| Piece | GLD jewelry | Saphir |
|---|---|---|
| 5mm Miami Cuban chain | $140 to $170 | $65 to $68 |
| Wider Cuban chain | 6mm: $160 to $190 | 10mm: $79 to $86 |
| Cuban bracelet | 5mm: $90; 6mm: $120 | 6mm: $49; 10mm: $55 |
| Tennis necklace | 3mm: $220 to $240; 5mm: $260 to $280 | 3mm: $79 to $89; 5mm: $99 to $100 |
| Rope chain | 4mm: $110 to $140 | 3mm gold: $57 to $66; 5mm gold: $77 to $86 |
| Warranty | Lifetime, $19.99 or $29.99 per replacement | Lifetime, no replacement fee listed |
| Returns | 14 days, unworn | 14 days, store credit or exchange |
To be fair to GLD, it runs "flash" versions of its 6mm Cuban at $80 to $95. Catch one of those and the gap narrows a lot.
Can you shower in GLD jewelry?
GLD's own FAQ gives two answers. It says gold-plated pieces can be worn "through showers and tough workouts," and its care tips on the same page say "Avoid exposing your jewelry to water, steam, or high humidity."
Saphir gives one answer. The Lifetime Warranty says everyday water contact, meaning showering, swimming, sweat and rain, "is fully covered and will never void your guarantee," and that the piece won't rust, tarnish or turn your skin green from normal wear. If you're the guy who never takes it off, that's the sentence you want in writing.
Is GLD's lifetime warranty really lifetime?
Yes, with conditions. It covers gold-plated and vermeil pieces that aren't custom, and it excludes solid gold, custom work, moissanite, grillz, watches and apparel, plus anything lost or stolen. Every replacement costs $19.99 or $29.99.
Saphir's warranty has limits too: it doesn't cover loss, accidental damage, or the normal scratches a chain picks up over the years. But it covers rust, tarnish and discoloration from water for as long as you own the piece, and the policy lists no fee to use it.
Where does GLD beat Saphir?
- Solid gold and vermeil. If you want to step up from plated steel, GLD sells both. Saphir doesn't.
- Team and athlete pieces. If you want an NFL or college pendant, that's GLD's lane.
- Flash sales. A 6mm Cuban at $80 to $95 is a good price for that brand.
Where GLD doesn't win is on everyday price for the same plated build, or on a warranty with no fee attached.
So who should buy GLD, and who should buy Saphir?
Buy GLD Shop if you want the name, the sports tie-ins or a path into solid gold. Buy Saphir if you want a classic 5mm gold Cuban in 18K gold PVD over 316L stainless steel for under $70, made in the US, waterproof, with a lifetime warranty and a free chain in the box.

Frequently asked questions
Is GLD Shop legit?
Everything on its own site points to a real company: GLD designs in Miami, builds most chains on 316L stainless steel with PVD gold, and now sells at gld.com (thegldshop.com forwards there).
Is GLD jewelry real gold?
The standard line is gold PVD over stainless steel, so there's gold in the finish but it isn't solid. GLD also sells vermeil over sterling silver and a separate solid gold line at solid gold prices.
What is a cheaper alternative to GLD Shop?
Saphir's 5mm Miami Cuban is $65 to $68 against GLD's $140 to $170, in 18K gold PVD over 316L stainless steel, with a lifetime warranty that lists no replacement fee.
What is GLD's return policy?
GLD accepts returns within 14 days of delivery, in brand-new, unworn condition.
